At a glance
For newly appointed consuls, accompanying family members, and administrators — from before travel through the first month.
Begin with the right pathway
There is no single accreditation route for every international posting in New York. Consular officers, bilateral chiefs of mission, United Nations personnel, and accompanying family members may follow different procedures. Begin with the administrator designated by your consulate or mission.
Before you travel
Organize the document categories identified for the principal and each accompanying family member. Confirm who will make each official notification, which documents must remain original, and which records should be carried rather than shipped.
During the first month
Provide local contact details to the designated administrator, begin applicable notification steps, and ask how identification, tax, driving, vehicle, or related responsibilities apply to your circumstances. Do not assume they are automatic.
